Confederate symbols are still celebrated despite the ugly history they symbolize. John Oliver suggests some representations of southern pride that involve less racism and more Stephen Colbert.

The funny thing is that my great grandmother is still alive and outlived him and all his other children. and is 100, and she has told me in detail of the day he confronted her and for years now that is all that my children will know about him, that he was a racist womanizer and a cheater. just because you have a ancestor that is a fucked up loser doesn't mean you are one, but if you try to justify there actions then you are one

The confederate south was not nearly as unified as some historians, or even media/movies would lead you to believe.
The reality was that few poor southerners actually wanted to go fight for rich landowners and even fewer of those poor people owned slaves.
So, landed gentry started making up stuff (propaganda) about what the North would do if they won or if they South gave in.
Just human history repeating itself. Scare, force or otherwise coerce a large, poor class of people to do something that favors a small percentage of elite .

Many of the British sugar cane raisers had slaves on their plantations in the Caribbean. When England outlawed slavery in the 1830s these same slave owner threatened to join up with slave owners in the South. I love it when self-righteous twits like John Oliver come over here and start guilt-tripping Americans. He seems to forget that it was the English that started slavery in what would become America. The Brits ran slavery here for more than 150 years. It was only after we whipped their butts in the American Revolution that they suddenly got "religion" and started saying slavery was wrong. As long as slavery was putting money in their pockets they didn't seem to have any trouble with it.
As for the one man who talked about his ancestor defending his farm he was right on the point. When the black man tried to accuse him of being a slave owner he pointed out it was his own kin that worked the farm, not slaves. He brings up the price of a slave because it was a major expenditure. Oliver, instead of being honest and acknowledging the guy was right, starts doing some idiot dancing to distract the audience from the truth. This white man didn't ask his black accuser how much he cost, but a slave. It's a valid point considering the black man had falsely assumed this white man's ancestor was a slave owner. John Oliver lacks the balls to admit he was wrong and instead continues to mock the white man. What a pathetic geek.

@RonPaulHatesBlacks In the United States, military conscription has been used many times during its wars, particularly in the Cold War. Even though the draft was abolished in 1973, men of draft age (between 18-25 years) still have to register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of the 18th birthday so a draft can be readily resumed if needed. However During the Vietnam War, about two-third of American troops were volunteered, the rest were selected for military service through the drafts. In the beginning of the war, names of all American men in draft-age were collected by the Selective Service System. When someone’s name was called, he had to report to his local draft board, which was made up of various community members, so that they could begin to evaluate his draft status. By this manner, local draft boards had an enormous power to decide who had to go and who would stay. Consequently, draft board members were often under pressure from their family, relatives and friends to exempt potential draftees. During the Vietnam War, the United States military used chemical agents in its fight against Ho Chi Minh's Army of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. The most important of those chemical weapons were the incendiary napalm and the defoliant Agent Orange. Napalm was used in flamethrowers, bombs and tanks in World War II. It is believed to have been formulated to burn at a specific rate and to adhere to surfaces to increase its stopping power. During combustion, napalm rapidly deoxygenates the available air and generates large amounts of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Napalm is an incendiary mixture of a gelling agent and a volatile petrochemical (usually gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel). The name is a portmanteau of two of the constituents of the original thickening and gelling agents: co-precipitated aluminium salts of naphthenic acid and palmitic acid. Napalm B is the more modern version of napalm (utilizing polystyrene derivatives)

one of the reasons so many confederate monuments were built was because of the reconciliation of US military around the time of the Spanish American war. This period from the 1890s until the 1910s saw very careful selection of leadership based on former loyalties so the men under all US military leadership would feel that they were not a conquered people from the south but rather reunited brothers and respected parts of this country.
As for what trump said about where does it stop.., yea, Jefferson was vandalized in DC and we were really tearing anything down from the pre civil war era because of the obvious hypocracy of their "all men are created equal" likes as slave owners. Out here in Colorado our statues are mostly post civil war and we have statues of murders and cowboys who scalped our native peoples.. yea.. as it turns out most people you study from history are not exactly gentle and humble people.. In Japan, the statues are vastly of their leading mass murderers and same as i see in Korea. To me the problem is not the statues but our reverence of power and that is why we end up with jesse james, saigo takamori, and nathan bedford forrest statues all over the world.

actually, there's some truth to that. The Nazi's did borrow a lot of ideas from the Confederates. And Hitler loved the racism. Here's an ok overview: www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/30/how-american-racism-influenced-hitler

Of course, I understand the arguments against confederate flags, statutes, etc. My argument was about demonizing critically acclaimed authors of a different era, such as Harper Lee, Margaret Mitchell, Mark Twain, etc. Books too controversial to read today. Scary.

it's really easy to make it sound like legally being forced to return a slave to their master is wrong but if you think about it like you're a citizen of state in this country and your neighbors have stolen what would be on avg adjusting for inflation worth about $27,000 each. This asset is still in the same country and they know the people who have hold of it. If your own country which you pay taxes to is helping people steal tens if not hundred of thousands of dollars from you, why wouldn't you want to stop paying them taxes and declare independence?

@RonPaulHatesBlacks and you won't reply bc you have no counter argument. Slavery was and still is wrong hence why ppl should be fighting to punish corporations like Apple for depending on 3rd world slaves to profit instead of removing statues from a century ago. I don't sympathise with plantation owners either I just know that it is wrong to group the honorable soldiers who fought for the CSA who though they were defending their families and communities not slavery with the people who manipulated them into fighting their war

Literally there are more slaves in the world now then there were in the times of the Civil War. Why don't you do something about that instead of shaming people for being proud of their heritage?

A Limey bastard has no right telling Americans to take down statues of objectively one of the best American generals Robert E Lee. The only reason he was a Confederate general instead of leader of the Union army which he was offered previously was because he could not bring himself to fight against his home-state of Virginia. He didn't support leaving the union or the concept of slavery but he was a compassionate and respectable general with the honor not to betray his people no matter what.

@Paul Williams I bet you also believe that the War on Terror was a war started by the Elites to protect their interests and abused 9/11 to recruit Americans who thought they were fighting to defend their country(which would be an accurate claim). It was the same with the South in the Civil War. The owners of plantations didn't fight, they got innocent working class Americans to fight on their behalf and made them think they were fighting to protect their families and states from an elitist central govt. You must honor the fallen of the North and South as both thought they were fighting to protect their families and communities, not fighting for elite interests just like in Iraq and Vietnam.

@Paul Williams Dude research history instead of using a constitution that you clearly never read as an argument. The declaration states that the USA is a Union of States not one United State. Plus in 1797 not even an Empire with a monarch could unite an area as large and the American Eastern Coast under one united culture and regime. People in the Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, & New England were all very distinct from eachother, they only united against British Imperial rule in favour of a democratic republic because it was in every state's best interest to trade with eachother free from tariffs rather than with Britain and being heavily taxed for trading with anyone who wasn't a British subject.

@Has the High Ground so i understand why people hate the CSA elite class for getting rich off of other's suffering but you need to realise that those same wealthy elites just like in today's wars would never fight themselves instead depending on manipulating the less fortunate to fight their battles, and tell them they are fighting for a moral cause instead of for the elites profits. Just like the wars in the middle east today.

    • Gavin O'Leary

      Gavin O'Leary

      2 күн мурун

@Has the High Ground difference is that in the 1860s people who loyal to their State, not to the federal government which acted more like a UN of the American states than as a central govt. The Union caused many atrocities against innocent American citizens of the South who had nothing to do with slavery. You must honor the combatants of both the CSA & USA as both fought to protect their families and communities, neither fought bc they wanted to keep or abolish slavery even if the goal of the war's elites was to preserve it. Only 2% of the South's population owned slaves, the soldiers who fought on behalf of this elite fought to protect their homes and families from chaos. The CSA elites did horrible things to their enslaved black population but they paid soldiers to fight on their behalf as they weren't real men who could fight for themselves. In states like Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas the working class Dixie men mostly owned their own family farms or coal mines to live their lives. They did not use slave labour like the Elite plantation owners did. Many of these innocent farmers and laborers suffered casualties by the Union army and had their homes burned and families killed im the crossfire hence why they fought for the CSA. Not because they wanted to preserve slavery, because they feared the Union army would harm their families like they did to the innocent self made farmers who were slaughtered just bc their state governments were controlled by immoral elites who got rich off slavery.
